Day 1
๐ Day 1 โ Start With Your โWhyโ
Welcome to Day 1 of our musical advent calendar! ๐
As we head into the busiest month of the year, I want to start by asking you something important: Why did you begin learning music in the first place?
Letโs be honest โ December can feel overwhelming. Between shopping, cooking, parties, and everything else on your to-do list, practice often slips to the bottom. But hereโs the thing: remembering your โwhyโ is like having a compass ๐งญ that keeps you on track when life gets busy.
Maybe you started because you wanted to play carols for your family. ๐ถ
Perhaps youโve always dreamed of performing at a gathering.
Or maybe music is your escape โ your quiet sanctuary from the noise of everyday life.
Whatever your reason, reconnecting with it will fuel your motivation through the festive season and beyond. Iโve seen this with countless students โ those who stay connected to their deeper purpose are the ones who make consistent progress, even when life throws curveballs.
โ๏ธ Todayโs Task (5 minutes)
Grab a piece of paper or open a note on your phone.
Write down three reasons why you love making music or why you want to improve.
Be specific!
Instead of โI enjoy it,โ try:
“I love the feeling of losing myself in a beautiful melody” or “I want to play Happy Birthday for my grandson without feeling nervous.”
๐ Put your list somewhere youโll see it regularly โ on your music stand, inside your practice diary, or as a phone wallpaper.
๐ต For more advanced players: Add a fourth reason that looks ahead six months.
What piece do you dream of playing? What skill would transform your confidence or tone?
This simple exercise might feel basic, but I promise โ when Day 15 rolls around and youโre tired from holiday preparations โ glancing at these words will give you the gentle boost you need. ๐ซ
Happy practising,
Fiona
P.S. If youโd like to share your โwhyโ with me, Iโd love to hear it. Your story might just inspire someone else in our musical community. ๐
